Gnomon Hosts First Ever Industry Day

Gnomon alumni took the stage at Glendale Community College’s Student Center to talk about school, career paths, and the visual effects industry.
Last week, Gnomon hosted its first-ever Industry Day at Glendale Community College.
Gnomon alumni Beat Reichenbach, Spyro Alexander, and Rodrigo Brea took the stage at Glendale Community College’s Student Center to share their career journeys and advice with students from GCC and surrounding high schools.
Meet the Speakers
Beat Reichenbach graduated from Gnomon’s Certificate in Digital Production program in 2016 and went on to join Blur Studio's scene assembly team. He shared his experience working on multiple projects within Blur, including Netflix’s award-winning Love, Death & Robots animated anthology series. Beat’s artwork was predominantly featured in the recent “The Art of Blur” exhibition at the Gnomon Gallery.
Spyro Alexander is a recent graduate, having completed Gnomon’s Certificate in Digital Production program in January of this year. Spyro was hired at Santa Monica Studio prior to his graduation, where he is currently working with the character art team on an unannounced title.
Rodrigo Brea graduated from Gnomon’s Certificate in Digital Production program in 2017. Upon graduating, Rodrigo joined Survios’ environment art team, where he’s had the opportunity to work on 3 of Survios’ published titles. Recently, he was tasked with contributing numerous environment assets for Battlewake, a fantasy naval combat game where players play as pirate lord and captain their very own pirate ships.
The three covered a variety of topics. As a member of the scene assembly team at Blur Studio, Beat pressed on the importance of building strong foundational skills to prepare for a career in 3D art. Spyro, the most recent Gnomon grad on the panel and a member of the character art team at Santa Monica Studio, reminded students that paying attention, doing well in class, and cultivating good relationships with instructors can lead to potential job recommendations down the road. Rodrigo took a more industry-side approach and discussed the differences between working in virtual reality, where he is currently an environment artist at the VR studio Survios, versus traditional games. After the panel, audience members were welcome to ask questions of their own to learn more about each artist’s specific career path and about the television, film, and games industries in general.
Gnomon’s Industry Day was created to connect community college students with industry professionals, who can shed light on their respective industries and the opportunities available to students who are interested in pursuing a career in digital production. If you are a community college professor or student and would like to host an Industry Day at your college, we’d love to talk to you!
