Interview with Rain Rouhani

What inspired you to work as a CG artist?

I did not have easy access to a lot of movies and series growing up. One of the places I lived for most of my childhood was Iran. Due to limited access to international cinema, and more conventional ways of viewing films and TV, I instead frequented a DVD store in Valiasr St, where I could purchase movies. However, these films were dubbed, and occasionally parts were cut or altered. To get around this, I would seek out street vendors selling DVDs.

Although the quality was sometimes bad, it was a small price to pay for the chance to watch movies in their original form, and occasionally even as soon as they were released in other countries. I even learned English by watching movies this way!

While I had a much harder time accessing media than an average kid, the films I watched became more meaningful to me and fueled my passion to one day be able to contribute to movie magic!

What has your educational journey looked like transitioning from 2D to 3D?

I’ve had the opportunity to live in several different countries before settling here, making the U.S. the fifth country I’ve called home. My background is in 2D art, and I started studying at Atelier de Sèvres in Paris, where I learned about perspective, illustration, and character design, and explored different parts of the 2D animation industry. After a year, I still felt I hadn’t reached the level I wanted, so I spent another year sketching in the streets of Paris, drawing everything I saw—people, buildings, anything around me. I never left home without my sketchbook. That year really helped me see the world differently. I realized everything around me, from people talking to the shape of rocks and clouds, could inspire a story or spark an idea.

How did you first learn about Gnomon?

My aunt was actually the one who suggested that I add Gnomon to my list of U.S.-based schools that I was considering. In 2017, I visited the U.S. to check out colleges, but at the time I didn’t fully understand 3D or how it could fit into my work. I decided to move to Denmark to improve my foundational skills. I spent a lot of time studying classical artwork and gesture drawings. But by the end of 2018, I returned to France and started questioning what I wanted to do next. I began asking myself if I would regret not learning 3D, so I decided to apply to Gnomon, as I felt it was one of the most impressive schools in that domain.

How did it feel adding another move to your journey?

Even though I was excited, having lived alone from a young age and always being on the move, I was unsure about relocating for the fifth time at the age of 21. The idea of starting over was intimidating, and I was tired of constantly moving. Moving to the U.S. was a big decision because it meant starting fresh again. But in the end, it was definitely worth it, and I do not regret it at all.

Walk us through the application process to specializing in a track at Gnomon.

The transition to Gnomon went smoothly. The staff were very friendly and provided continuous guidance during my application process. I began the Certificate in Digital Production program in 2019. At first, I was really intimidated by 3D. I wasn’t very tech-savvy and barely knew how to use a PC, but I practiced every day. The atmosphere at Gnomon was great throughout my studies, and I made wonderful friends among my classmates and the staff.

Once I began learning 3D art, I fell in love with it. It felt like I was finally tapping into a part of my creativity that I hadn’t reached before. I felt there was still so much to learn, so I decided to stay at Gnomon and transition to the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Initially, I didn’t realize how much went into making a 3D animated film or video game, so I chose the generalist track to try different skills. It was in my second term that I found my true passion for sculpting stylized characters. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

The generalist track allowed me to gain proficiency in sculpting, texturing, lighting, and rendering, empowering me to tell stories through my work. This experience was incredibly fulfilling and provided me with a powerful medium to convey narratives through imagery. Although my journey began as a generalist, I now specialize in character art, where I continue to focus on bringing unique and stylized characters to life.

Can you share what were your biggest learnings?

I remember my first day at Gnomon during orientation. Max Dayan, the Director of Education, stood on stage and said, “This isn’t just a school, it’s a 2–4-year interview. These people could be your future coworkers or supervisors.” He was right. People remember if you work hard and treat them well. Gnomon taught me not only to be friends with people but also to see them as potential co-workers in the industry.

The people I met there continuously inspired me. I was surrounded by talented peers who spent days and nights working. I used to wake up every day at 7:00am to be at school by 8:00, just to get a coveted spot in the VR lab. A small group of friends, just as dedicated, would arrive early too. Seeing how motivated everyone was made me want to work even harder!

The dedication didn’t stop there. Even at 1:00am, when the school closed, you’d see students leaving after long hours of work. I admired their commitment. I made great friends who not only helped me grow as an artist but also as a person. My partner, who was also a Gnomon student, would push me if I was too tired to show up early, motivating me to stay focused. We supported each other to always keep improving.

Gnomon was a unique experience because I didn’t just nurture friendships with my peers, but I also got to witness the incredible growth of some of the most talented artists in the industry—people I am sure will become giants of storytelling one day!

Additionally, Gnomon taught me how to manage deadlines, gain technical skills, and build strong friendships—lessons that will inspire me throughout my career.

How did you get your current job at AGBO and what does your role entail?

I had the incredible opportunity to work at AGBO thanks to a Gnomon event with the Career Placement department (Employer Preview Day). We were presenting our work, and the creative directors happened to stop by my workstation, and I was able to show them my reel. The following week, I was contacted by them, and the rest is history.

AGBO was founded by some of the most distinguished directors and producers, Anthony and Joe Russo. The company has an immensely successful range of projects under its belt, including the Academy Award-winning film Everything Everywhere All At Once. It has been an amazing place to grow as an artist!

I work as a 3D generalist and concept artist. This really allowed me to combine the two worlds from which I came - 2D & 3D! My goal is to contribute as much as possible, from pre-production to production—whether it's offering design ideas or following provided designs to create what's needed for upcoming projects. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented people at AGBO.

What is your advice to those beginning their own job search?

I encourage you to put yourself out there and don’t be afraid of failing. Even if you stumble, it means you tried, and that’s what matters. At Gnomon, there are incredible industry talks—go to as many as you can. Stay after, introduce yourself to the speakers, and make connections. Take advantage of events like SIGGRAPH, GDC, and Lightbox. I know ticket prices can be tough, but if you can attend, the experience is invaluable. You’ll meet professionals, share your portfolio, and get honest feedback that will help you grow.

Most importantly, be kind and respectful, but never forget to be confident. You’ve worked hard, and you belong here.

Getting a job often comes down to timing, luck, and your dedication. If things don’t work out right away, don’t lose hope. Keep going, keep pushing, and remember that every step you take is bringing you closer to your goals. You’ve got this!
