Visual Storytelling: The Production Design of “Nimona”

We are thrilled to welcome Aidan Sugano, the film’s production designer and character art director, as he breaks down the stunning visual storytelling of the hit Netflix film.
Based on the award-winning graphic novel by ND Stevenson, Nimona tells the story of a knight who is framed for a crime he didn't commit, and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.
During this livestream-only event, viewers will get a comprehensive presentation from Aidan Sugano on the style guide of Nimona, focusing on the visual choices and techniques used to execute the look of the film. He’ll break down everything from initial source material and analysis, the translation of the ruleset from 2D to 3D, character design, environment design, material design, color theory, and the application to the final render style.

Production Designer
Aidan is a graduate of San Jose State University where he studied in the Animation/Illustration program. He always had a love for art and animation gave him a way to help bring it to life. In his short career, Aidan has worked on projects including Spies in Disguise (character design), Ice Age: Collision (Character Design, Set Design, Color Design), and Ice Age: Continental Drift (Junior Designer). He currently serves as a Production Designer and Character Art Director on Netflix’s Nimona. Aidan loves the outdoors, traveling, climbing, and surfing in his free time.
