Calling all Spidey fans! Join us on Tuesday, November 14th for an in-depth look at the making of the groundbreaking film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse!

We are thrilled to welcome Head of Character Animation Alan Hawkins, FX and Look of Picture Supervisor Pav Grochola, and Senior Look of Picture Supervisor Bret St.Clair to the Gnomon Stage for a behind-the-scenes breakdown of the hit film.

During this event, these talented supervisors will provide detailed insight into how the artists at Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Pictures Animation collaborated to bring a new cinematic vision to the screen. This journey through the Spider-Verse will explore everything from the references and aspirations that inspired the distinct visual styles of the movie to the innovation and techniques that it took to achieve the final imagery.

Alan Hawkins

Head of Character Animation at Sony Pictures Imageworks

Alan Hawkins is the head of character animation at Sony Pictures Imageworks, who most recently supervised Sony Pictures Animation’s SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE.

He most recently completed work on Sony Pictures Animation’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA and the Academy Award®-nominated THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, from director Mike Rianda and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Hawkins served as animation supervisor on Sony Pictures Animation’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION,  SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE, and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2. He was also a lead animator on CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2, and ARTHUR CHRISTMAS.

His other credits include the Academy Award®-nominated SURF'S UP, Robert Zemeckis' BEOWULF, and the original HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. Alan joined Sony Pictures Imageworks in 2004 to work on Sony Pictures Animation's first feature film, OPEN SEASON.

Hawkins is a graduate of Ringling College of Art and Design, and grew up in Littleton, Colorado.

Bret St.Clair

Bret St.Clair

Senior Look of Picture Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks

Bret St.Clair is a Senior Look of Picture Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks with almost three decades of industry experience working on live-action and animated features.

St.Clair joined Imageworks in 2002, serving in roles as Senior Look Development and Lighting TD and CG Supervisor. His credits include SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, the Academy Award®-winning SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, THE POLAR EXPRESS, THE MATRIX RELOADED, GODZILLA, STUART LITTLE, and VANILLA SKY.

Previously, St.Clair worked as a CG and VFX Supervisor at Asylum Visual Effects, VFX Supervisor at Meteor Studios, and CG Supervisor at Centropolis FX.

Pav Grochola

Pav Grochola

FX and Look of Picture Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks

Pav Grochola is an FX and Look of Picture Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently completing work on the animated feature SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE. 

After finishing his Fine Arts degree in Australia in 1999, Grochola saw a future in utilizing computers creatively for the screen. He began his VFX career in commercials but soon moved to London to work on films.  

Grochola spent five years at Double Negative, specializing in effects animation and working on several of the HARRY POTTER films.  He has since worked on over 30 feature films and has received numerous awards.  In 2012 and 2020, he won Annie Awards for his effects work on EDGE OF TOMORROW and THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES.  In 2019, he won a VES award for co-supervising the FX on SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE.
